Blog post #4: Social Media: How a Degree in Communications Allows you to Plug- In

Still not sure if a major in communications would be the right fit for you? Perhaps you would be interested in the social media aspect of a communications major. Social media is one of the fastest- growing technological platforms that our generation has access to. You all use social media in your daily lives through apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Even this blog is a form of social media which allows us to connect and communicate with one another. Social media is new, exciting, and relevant; it allows you to connect with people in ways like never before. Who wouldn’t want to be involved with something that is so innovative and important? With a degree in communications, you are given the ability to understand social media on a deeper level. Careers in social media marketing and social media management are becoming more and more prominent, and these careers are easily accessible to individuals with communications degrees.

Social media internships have become very popular amongst communications students, and they are available at several well- renowned companies as well as smaller organizations. Companies such as Disney, Universal, ABC, CNN, and Discovery all have summer internship programs that focus on social media management and marketing. You all are from Howard County, Maryland, putting you in an advantageous position for local internships. Companies local to the DC/ Maryland/ Virginia area such as the Smithsonian Institution and Under Armor also have social media internship programs, which are extremely easy for University of Maryland students to access. Programs such as these internships allow communications students to get started with their careers in social media marketing and management while they are still in school.

I interviewed Kelli Smith, a graduate of Miami University and a current employee of Disney, about her career in social media. She graduated with a degree in communications and is currently working as a social media consultant for Disney. She states that she highly recommends a career in social media because it is “fast- paced, fun, and really engaging”. In our interview, she expressed that she feels extremely fortunate to have decided to major in communications and have decided on social media as her chosen career. She also stated that she feels as though her undergraduate degree in communications left her feeling extremely prepared for her work in social media. (389 Words)
